Booking a Makeup Artist

When booking a makeup artist it’s important to know what you are after! Research what makeup looks/style you would like and look around different resources to find your perfect makeup artist! Lucy from lashes by Lucy has put together a quick guide when choosing your makeup artist!

Firstly what is your makeup for?

Work event, ball, wedding, family function, reunion, girls night out? The list is endless as are the possibilities with make up looks! Once you and your makeup artist know what the look is for/appropriate for you can get to work playing around with ideas and looks.

Where to find your makeup artist?

If you are a “brand snob” and have your ultimate favourite products in the makeup world go to those makeup counters and talk to the makeup artist there, have a look at her makeup and ask to see some portfolios, this is a great way to have a look at their work and also redeem what you spend on your favourite products. Win win.
Instagram is a great way to find a huge scale of makeup artist and see first hand what their work is like a lot of up and coming makeup artists are great at promoting on social media and keeping up to date with trends and their profile feed. Also very easy to contact and find what location they are in.
Referrals are amazing!

If someone you know knows a fantastic makeup artist defiantly book a trial or request to look at their work. There are a lot of makeup artist out there with makeup school graduating over 30 new artists every 3 months so I can be hard to distinguish between a makeup artist on paper and a true eye for flare makeup goddess or god, guys are great at makeup too!

Cost

It’s important to not get ripped off by an artist for certain events, as soon as you say wedding some artists eyeballs can light up into dollar signs the second their ears pick up the sound wave. Research how much your style of makeup usually costs at a few places and go off that, remember to consider travel costs to if your artist is traveling to you.

What style am I going for and how do I explain this to my makeup artist?

Photos of looks are a perfect example for most artists bearing in mind that Photoshop and filters and expert lighting have more than likely come into play to get the perfect photo.

Talk to your makeup artist about what makeup you usually do or do not wear and what makes you feel comfortable, what areas of your face do you like and like to  draw attention to and what are some areas you would like to tone down or hide.

Do you like a natural untouched look? Or are you looking for a contoured cheekbone with baked concealer and a highlight as bright as a disco ball.

What ever look you are after talk to your artist and see if they are confident in that style or could recommend another artist or makeup product to achieve this look! Makeup artists are trained in colours and matching and can create a style for you that will leave you feeling amazing but the best thing about makeup is there are no rules either so you can create whatever look you want with a magic brush!
